Dot Gain

Dot gain is the increase in size of tiny ink dots when they are printed on paper or packaging. When a printer lays down ink, the dots can spread slightly, making colors look darker or more intense than intended. Dot gain can affect the accuracy of colors, especially in detailed images or designs, so it’s important to account for it when preparing files for print.

Why it Matters:

Dot gain can change how a design looks once it’s printed. If it’s not managed, colors may appear too dark, images can lose detail, and brand colors may not match expectations.

Understanding and controlling dot gain helps ensure that the final printed product matches the original design.

Benefits of Managing Dot Gain:

  • Maintains color accuracy: Keeps printed colors true to the design
  • Preserves detail: Prevents images or text from looking blurry or muddy
  • Reduces waste: Avoids costly misprints due to color errors

Use Cases in Print and Packaging:

  • Labels and packaging: Ensures brand colors and logos print accurately on boxes, bottles, and wrappers
  • Marketing materials: Keeps brochures, flyers, and posters looking sharp and professional
  • High-detail images: Maintains clarity in photos or graphics where fine details matter
