Variable Data Printing

Variable Data Printing (VDP) is a digital printing method that lets you change specific parts of a design, like names, barcodes, serial numbers, ingredients, or images, from one print to the next without stopping or resetting the printer. This means every printed piece can be unique, even in a large print run.

For example, VDP is how companies print thousands of labels that each have a different expiration date, batch number, or QR code.

Why it matters:

VDP makes printing faster, more flexible, and more personalized. It’s especially important for products that need traceability, customized marketing, or constantly changing information.

Benefits:

  • Personalization: Each piece can have unique text, numbers, or images
  • Efficiency: No need to restart the printer for every change
  • Accuracy: Helps automate important details like serial numbers or dates
  • Traceability: Essential for industries that track batches or product origins

Use cases in print and packaging:

  • Labels: Expiration dates, batch/lot numbers, barcodes, and QR codes
  • Packaging: Unique codes for promotions, tracking, or anti-counterfeiting
  • Mailers: Personalized names or addresses for direct mail campaigns
  • Tickets or passes: Unique IDs, seat numbers, or access codes

VDP allows every printed piece to be different while still being produced quickly and accurately, perfect for labels, tracking, and personalized printing.
